PaGES
WxCheck uses a collection of eight tabbed pages to collect and present the weather.
Current PaGEThe Current page displays the current conditions at the default station. The default station is defined by you. This will typically be your home airport. The color-coded boxes let you know instantly if the weather is within your personal limits. Green means go!
Metars PaGEThe Metars page displays Decoded Metars retrieved from the Aviation Digital Data Service (ADDS) an internet site familiar to many pilots. The METAR stations shown on this page are defined on the Options page. Put stations on this list that you frequently check for Metars or TAFs.
Forecast PaGEThe Forecast page displays forecast weather for a selected station. At program startup this is the information for the default station shown on the Current page. The weather displayed on the Forecast page is taken from NOAA’s National Weather Service Meteorological Development Lab. http://www.nws.noaa.gov/mdl/synop/products.shtml
Airports PaGEThe Airports page is used to display a global list of Metar stations. The pilot has the ability to add, change or delete airports on the list. The pilot can also update runway information for these airports. The initial installed station list contains runway information for most domestic US civilian airports and many international stations without runway information.
AirCRAFT PaGEThe Aircraft page is used to display a list of Aircraft. The pilot has the ability to add, change or delete aircraft on the list. The initial installed aircraft list contains information for the Cessna 172, Diamond DA20, Piper Warrior II PA28-161, Piper Archer II PA26-181 and Piper Arrow III PA28R-201. This is used to calculate Takeoff and Landing distances based on current weather conditions.
User Defined PaGEThe next three Pages are User Defined Pages. These pages can be set to startup any internet site. These sites are defined on the Options Page. The purpose of these pages is to make it easier to collect flight planning information and connect to frequently used internet sites. By default these sites are set to NOAA’s Aviation Weather Center, an FBO scheduling site and Duats. The program connects to these sites automatically at start-up. This means that there is no need to open separate windows to connect to these sites.
Options PaGEThis page is used to control many of the options used by the other Pages. These options include setting personal minimums for ceiling, visibility and wind. The default station is defined here as well as a list of eight other stations that appear on radio buttons on the Current and Forecast pages that allow the user to quickly switch to information about frequently used stations. When personal minimums are exceeded on either the Current or Forecast Pages those fields will be highlighted with colors defined here on the Options Page. By default a warning value will turn Yellow and a below minimum value will be Red, values within set limits will be green. |

PurposeMaking the call on aviation weather and minimums takes time and effort. There are many weather sources and many information formats to understand.
What the pilot really needs is a simple way to answer the question: Can I fly today?
WxCheck was developed to help answer this question. And a lot more.
After I developed the first page I had my simple “Red light/Green light” decision and decoded METARs
Then I realized that I was flipping through a growing number of internet sources to plan and organize a flight.
WxCheck collects all theses sources in a single package that makes it easier to collect and interpret all this information. |
